Octagonal stop signs why think ?... Many Fountains are octagonal...The temple that holds the dome on the rock is octagonal...There is said to have been an octagonal church on the site of Simons ( cephas )Peters home.

Eight is two times two times two.the first cubic number after 1.Within architecture the octagon often signifies the transition between Heaven and Earth,as a bridge between the square and the circle.

Former Heaven sequence, said to represent the ideal pattern of transformations in the cosmos. In religious symbolism, the eight step is often associated with spiritual evolution or salvation.

Three steps before enter the octagonal fountain... Earth is the third planet from the sun and fifth largest.

In music three to two and three to one define intervals of the fifth and its octave, the most beautiful harmonies and the key to ancient tunings. three male in some cultures, female in others, three like a tree bridges heaven and earth. It is the return to unity, past present and future...knower,knowing,and the known...

Five marries male and female. five the number of water, water one of the five platonic solids.Dry things are either dead or awaiting water.

Unlike threes and fours, fives disdain the plane, waiting for the third dimension to fit together to produce the fifth element.

The 8 pointed star is actually looking down on two 4 sided pyramids peak to peak if you were to make the 8 pointed star 3dimensional and rotate it 90 deg you would see an hour glass shaped pyramid under a inverted pyramid

I want to point out to some people who asked what the eight point star pattern used in Moroccan zillij and other crafts meant for places like uae etc...to make sure they are not asking about usage of this pattern in the modern structures in the Gulf region. Moroccan artisans are and have been contracted to build mosques and palaces all over the Arab world, particularly in the Middle East. Something to consider when thinking about this or any other aspects of architecture/design.

I am not sure what you are asking for in terms of images. Most of the images in this post were taken from other sources and cited, so you would need to contact those publishers for permission to further reproduce.

8 point star is an ancient symbol of Armenian nation, coming from the landing of Noah's Ark atop Mt. Ararat. It is a symbol of their sacred architectural invention of placing a dome upon a square structure. It is known to house the Eye of God. The symbol lingers in any Armenian church around the world. stefan@9design.com

Thank you very much. I did try to make the article as objective and factual as possible. And the Ibn Al-Arabi diagram is upside down. I haven't gotten around to re-fixing it.

As for the symbolism of starts, all I can say for sure is that we as a species consistently, cross-culturally, use stars as symbols. And all symbols carry meaning.
