Just for fun, another article on the design of the chess board: http://ssubbanna.sulekha.com/blog/post/2008/03/temple-architecture-devalaya-vastu-part-three.htm.

It is symbolic of the grid used to architect temples in India. I have no doubt that Persians contributed greatly to the development of chess, but hold the game rose out of India. To me, the origin of chess doesn't matter so much as the symbolism it contains and the original, human understanding it was developed from.

I hold my position that chess originated in India and realize the game was refined and carried by Persian culture. Below is one citation of many to validate this view:

The entry on chess in Wikipedia also acknowledges India as the origin of chess - at least, the precursor of the game as we know it today. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origins_of_chess. My vague recollection of what I read earlier is that in India the game board reflected a particular layout used in temples. If I find the book I read, I will post the title/source.

I agree with your observation regarding the richness, complexity, and resilience of the Moroccan culture and cultural identity. Only one small correction...I thought the game of chess originated from Persia, not India.

Thanks,
