It is symbolic of the grid used to architect temples in India. I have no doubt that Persians contributed greatly to the development of chess, but hold the game rose out of India. To me, the origin of chess doesn't matter so much as the symbolism it contains and the original, human understanding it was developed from. My vague recollection of what I read earlier is that in India the game board reflected a particular layout used in temples. If I find the book I read, I will post the title/source.
