Tassels and Embroidery
By Sarah Tricha

Tassels and embroidery have always had a place in Moroccan design. Lately I’ve noticed them being applied in nontraditional ways. Silk threads normally used for embroidery are being twisted into bobbles for hair accessories, woven into bracelets, rings, and necklaces, or used to covered ordinary pens with colorful designs. Tassels appear on key chains, as tiebacks with chunky metal hamsas, and as embellishments on jewelry, bags, or clothing. I don’t recall seeing such a large selection of tassels and embroidery bobbles during my previous trips to Morocco.

Hi,
I don’t have any for sale, but you could visit the Berber Trading company. They have some tiebacks for sale:

Hello. I am in Morocco now and impressed by the embroidery on the jalabas. I sew and know I can actually sew my own jalabas but I do not know how to do the embroidery. Is there a place on your website, another website or a book you would suggest? I am in particular interested in the buttons, functional or not in their many varieties and the possibility of making my own edgings. If you have any leads, do let me know.

Sorry, I don’t have any leads to offer you. If you are in Morocco now, you could visit the medina and see if you can make friends with a local artisan to find out more. Or, if you’re in Rabat, you could stop by the Maison du Artisan (see: http://moroccandesign.com/maison-du-artisan) and ask them for help finding leads.
Good luck!!
