Thank you for sharing your story. Because of lack of time, I normally don't read all the way through blog posts even when I want to, but yours kept me captivated. I've heard of many such tales of (Moroccan) mother-in-laws (though this mother-daughter-in-law thing is culturally universal, I think). How can we grasp all the motivations of another's actions, even when we understand some of them? It's a difficult situation for anyone, most of all, perhaps, for your daughter, but you seem to provide the support she needs to continue loving her family, even when they're trying. Though they seem bad now, these experiences will make her stronger.

Thank you for taking the time to read and leave a comment! I have a hard time finishing blog posts myself, so I appreciate the compliment. You know, mother-in-law/daughter-in-law or not, cross-cultural or not, you have to find your own happiness to share with others. I'm sad that my mother-in-law has had difficulty finding happiness in her life. Religion hasn't seemed to help her with that, which is unfortunate. Islam has much to offer, as does any true faith for any true person.

What a lovely story and true in any family. My own Mother-in-law was just as brutal though without the same reason behind it. This lady seems to be passing on a tradition of torture: learned from her motherinlaw and passed to her son's wife. Torture born of a lack of freedom
for her gender? Envy for her daughter-in-law's freedom? So wonderful that her granddaughter will be brought up to know she is a person and valuable with strengths, rights and freedoms and
who can allow weakness in others because weakness does not define her situation.

I appreciate the daughter-in-law's restraint, it is difficult to show such restraint while being treated so badly. It shows great strength. But she did it out of love for her husband and her mother-in-law: so it is also beautiful.
